Discipleship is Doing

An excerpt from Filled to be Emptied: The Path to Liberation for Privileged People by Brandan J. Robertson

Blessed are you who hunger now, for you will be satisfied.” (Luke 6:21a NIV)

“Jesus came not merely to deliver a message to people who were low in spirits, but to outline a sociopolitical path that would result in equity and justice for a people who lived under cruel oppression. These words in the Beatitudes come at the beginning of Jesus’ public ministry and serve as a lens through which we should view everything else that he did. Jesus’ attitude was one that was seeking to create an environment in which those who were starving would be given enough food to make them full. The undergirding mindset here is that Jesus also knew that there was more than enough food to make this a reality….

The attitude of Jesus revealed in this beatitude is that there is more than enough to go around. There is more than enough to ensure that everyone is filled. And it is not just enough to believe this – those who follow Christ must be willing to work hard to make this a reality in our communities, countries, and around the world” (pg. 49-50).
